About Us

Welcome to the Australian High Commission, Abuja

A message from the Australian High Commissioner
HE John Donnelly

Welcome to the official website of the Australian High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria. We are also accredited to Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, Niger and The Gambia and are observers to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), representing Australia’s interests to over 250 million people in West Africa.

The Australian High Commission opened in Lagos shortly before independence in 1960 and we recently celebrated 60 years of diplomatic relations with Nigeria. We moved to Abuja in 2003.

As home to the oldest continuous culture on earth, I am committed to sharing Australia’s story through our Indigenous heritage and our reconciliation journey. We have much to share and learn.

West Africa is a diverse region of great dynamism and economic potential. African nations are important partners in a rules-based international system that is critical to global economic growth, security and human development. Australia has committed to long-term ties of friendship and cooperation with the countries of Africa and is acknowledged as a valued partner.

In line with our Partnerships for Recovery — Australia’s COVID-19 Development Response, Australia is prioritising its investments across Africa in ways that foster resilience and preserve recent economic and development gains. Our contributions through the UN system support communities and individuals in need.

As High Commissioner, I am committed to promoting collaboration and cooperation across many areas of common interest — including trade and investment, gender equality, disability-inclusion and good governance. We provide targeted support to communities across our countries of accreditation through our Direct Aid Program.

Follow us on social media for the latest news and activities of the High Commission, as well as Australia's growing cultural, development, humanitarian, business, and sporting links with the region.

I hope you find the information on this website to be useful.

John Donnelly
