The 25th of April is probably Australia’s most important national occasion, ANZAC Day.
It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War, the ‘Gallipoli Campaign’. Over 8000 Australian soldiers died during the campaign.
The Australian and New Zealand actions during the Gallipoli campaign left Australians a strong legacy. The creation of what became known as the “ANZAC legend” became an important part of the identity of both Australia and New Zealand, shaping the ways both countries viewed both their past and future.
For Australians, ANZAC Day is recognised as an occasion of national remembrance.
In order to commemorate ANZAC day in 2011, the Australian High Commission is organising an ANZAC Day Dawn Memorial Service in Abuja on Tuesday 19 April 2011.
